Z1/KZ projects
14 Mar 2025 18:43 - 15 Mar 2025 07:59
Just finishing up several bikes I picked up last year. One was a 74 Z1900 which was in fairly good condition. The other was , well Im not sure what the were trying to accomplish but it had a Kz900 engine with 73 carbs a LTD mag rear wheel with police caliper and the front off some hardly model. So the 74 I pulled the engine and powder coated the frame, installed new seat, 4 into 4 pipes, all new gaskets on the engine, new brake lines, rebuilt caliper and MC, chain, tires, replaced rear tail piece, new spokes, eletronic ignition and a lot of hand cleaning. I normally take the engine completely apart but this one I did not. Waiting for warmer weather to get a good test ride. The blue chopper thing I found a good titled LTD frame. Resolved some engine problems. So the engine has a 78 Kz1000 crank with 900cc pistons/new rings and reworked the head with cut seats new valves/seals then used a bunch of parts I had in the garage and a few purchased items to come up with what you see.
Those are the Delkivic pipes I decided to try. They have a slightly deeper tone (at least on start up) than the Doremi or PMC pipes. we just got some snow so it will be a while until I can test ride that bike. I was pleased at the cost of that set of Delkivic 4 into 4 pipes and the fitment was good.

When I pulled the engine on the blue chopper thing there was epoxy (and oil build up) all over the oil pan near the engine mount. When I removed the pan this is what I found. They had used a long bolt on the lower engine mount and when tightened it pushed the plug into the smaller diameter passage. I thought about it for a bit. I could buy a new set of cases or have that area welded up neither of which I really wanted to do. So a little more thought and it came to me. Since there was enough material (almost 3/8 inch on the wall) near the oil pump passage and on the exterior wall of the engine case I could make a plug which was 12mm at the oil pump passage, Then back that up with the 14mm plug which was the size of the original factory plug for that drilled oil pump passage. Using red loctite I tapped everything into place and for insurance I used some JB weld on the outside of the 14mm plug. I didn't bother trying to cover any of the cracked out housing. Those plugs only see s few PSI and are in there pretty good. When that engine was running there was oil being pumped back into the engine at that crack and leaking out where the factory plug was pushed in. What a mess.
