74 Z1A
06 Jul 2021 11:40 - 06 Jul 2021 15:48
In the back of my garage I have had a Z1 engine sitting on a engine stand for about 25 years now. one day I got to looking at it to see what it would take to get it running. The top end needed to be completely reworked. Two new valves, valve guides, new pistons and rings. The bottom end gears and shifter forks was in good condition. I did replace oil seals and bearings while I was in it. I needed other tings like friction plates, Ignition system, carbs and a couple of side covers. After the engine was said and done with I thought it would be cool to find a frame! (Can you guys see where this is going?) One and a half years later I'm thinking I should of had someone around to kick my BUTT for starting this project. I have had to buy every nut , bolt and components to build this thing, including spokes. I'm on the down hill side of this project now. the only thing is paint work. Until the wife gives me some more money, I'm Kind of in a holding pattern. It will look good next to my 73 Z1 and my ELR

For starting with just an engine you're doing pretty good! Are those carbs black?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Looking Good! You're ahead of me, I have a rolling chassis and an unassembled motor at this point. I've lost some of my interest in the project because the PO has not been helpful in getting a duplicate title for me. In NE you can obtain a Bonded Title, but that appears to be a real PITA.

I am going for a bonded title as well. My 74 is considered a Reassembled Vehicle

The carb body's are black. It's a baked on coating that is impervious to petroleum based or chemicals.

It is a Delkevic, polished stainless. great finish and center stand friendly. I will say when I initially installed it the bottom of the header was a lot closer to the ground than I liked. I fixed that problem by indexing the muffler about 10 degrees CCW and fabricating my own mount and center stand stop. There mounting hardware is worthless. By making the modifications I was able to get 1 1/2 to 2" more ground clearance.
