Is this a genuine 1981 "J" model?
21 Feb 2021 08:11 - 21 Feb 2021 08:12
I'm about to buy this bike but some issues looks strange.
Tank, side covers, ducktail and most of the bike seems to be genuine J but:
Front fork is unpainted but should be black.
Front fender is not the right unit.
Lower half of instruments should be black but they're chromed.
Mirrors should be round but they're rectangular.
Brake pedal engineering to work with the exhaust seem a bit weird.
Worst thing: 7th digit on the paper says "K" (as for a LTD) and black color. The bike below has been painted but I believe 1981 J was either red or silver.
What do you think???

Maybe over-imagining, but I'm leery of right turns with those drag pipes.

If the vin says it's a K model Ltd, then I would assume that's what it is.

Right but if it's really a LTD, a lot of work has been made to make it look like a J as looks like fuel tank, side covers, ducktail, seat, grabrail, rear wheel, etc. would have been replaced.martin_csr wrote: If the vin says it's a K model Ltd, then I would assume that's what it is.
The seller just bought it as has been said it is a "J". He's supposed to look at the VIN directly on the frame to see what it is (VIN I saw was from the registration papers).

Forty years have passed. The VIN is what the bike was when built. It is totally realistic to think someone along the way swapped whatever parts they wanted to restyle the bike. (Hmm... sounds strangely familiar for some reason.

Begins with JKAKZCK
7th is a K so it is a LTD. He sent a picture of the frame neck and it’s a K there also.
I would love to have a J but not a LTD disguised as a J.
So, I’m not buying this bike.

22 Feb 2021 14:46I don’t have the engine number. The engine is probably some of the parts off a J installed in this LTD.spdygon wrote: Post vin and engine number and I can tell you for sure...somethings don’t match up.
