1978 kz1000 quick restore
20 May 2020 20:08
Just scooped up a extremely nice kz1000 that just needs a little tlc, but has a couple sweet period and non period mods. A nice jardine exhaust, "magnum" progressive shocks ( I've never heard of this model shock). I was also pretty excited to find out there was already a dyna ignition installed. The wheels are in absolutely amazing condition. She runs but not very well with out choke, and i can't goose it with out it dying. The coils are shot, so new ones are on the way., and a carb overhaul is in order. The plan is to replace what isn't functional and run it. I dig the orginal wear and tear. Maybe try and buff out the faded tins, but absolutely not painting.
Ditching the vetter. If anyone is interested I'd be willing to trade for a headlight assembly and a rear grab bar., and/or a new seat. I kinda really dig the king/queen, but im 6'2 and it pushes me forward too much.
Cheers

Very nice! The seat has to go though!
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Good find. Those seats only belong on Goldwings

Got her running. But she wasnt firing on the 1 and 3 cylinder( maybe they were firing the pipes just weren't getting hot) Put new ignition coils, and the problem continued. Checked the plugs and both were oil fouled. Replaced them with new w24-esu plugs and now only the number 3 cylinder isnt getting hot. I'll try cleaning the pilot passages and go from there. Also got a replacement headlight housing and new wagner halogen.

A new grab bar is in the mail, and I'm waiting to get her running really well before i buy a new seat, kinda like a atta boy present to myself. Haha
Torn between the z1 cafe and a standard kz. I'm 6'2 and the z1 cafe looks like it might make some more leg bend for me.
Any tall riders using one?

Its been a while since i posted on this, but I've been riding! I rebuilt the carbs new rubber on both sides, the intake manifolds already have spider cracks and i bought them from z1parts! New fork oil, updated the fuse box to blades. Ended up ditching the brake splitter, putting a new master on, and stainless lines for front and back. Added a steering stabilizer, not because there was a problem, just for piece of mind and cool points. Pingel petcock because the POs "fix" was terrible.I found what I believe to be a dicks cycle west "Racer 1" left exit exhaust. I had to repack the baffle, but i was able to keep the center stand which was a deal breaker for sure. Would love to find a badge for it, but even finding info on it was tough. But she runs great! Plan for next winter is rebuild the forks with some racetec goodies.
