KZ200 scrambler project
03 Sep 2017 05:51
Hi everyone I've purchased a KZ200 scrambler project that's had quite abit of work already done to it, only problem is I cant find any vin number on the bike, doesn't appear to have been removed, the only numbers are the frame number on the steering head and engine number
Frame - KZ200A-030049
Engine - KZ200AE-061969
Could anyone help me date this bike please and maybe shed some light on the VIN Number.

The frame number is the VIN.
The back cover of the factory service manual shows VIN range by year. The engine number almost never matches, but your seem pretty far apart. I think there is also a website that has this info, but I don't recall its name. Hopefully somebody with a better memory will come along soon.
By the way, the factory service manual is one of the most important tools to own. There may be a link to a downloadable one on the home page of KZR, otherwise, they come up on eBay now and then. Be sure to get one for your specific model.
Looks like an interesting build.

Thanks guys Just looked at the back cover of the service manual that scirocco gave me, the frame appears to be from 1979 and the engine according to the cyclechaos website is a 1981, how do I go about applying for V5s etc? if the engine and frame are from different years, new to this

I don't know what a V5 is, but in the states, the frame number is usually what defines the bike's model and year etc.
That's quite a project you got there! Looks like a pretty good starting point. Good luck.

just wondering if anyone here knows if there are any other KZ tanks that would fit the 200? original kz200 fuel tanks seem to be quite hard to come by in the uk

You could try a tank from a KZ305 or a KZ400.
I recently discovered that a KZ550 tank fits nicely on a KZ440, so it might be worth a shot. However, the most readily available (and least expensive) tanks will most likely come from the LTD cruiser models. I'm not sure that is the tank shape you would really want for a scrambler.
