Ah I have a very understanding wife, can follow directions and am a bit compulsive

The shim tool fits over the head flange and locks the bucket while compressed by a cam lobe. You can then back the cam lobe off and easily remove the shim without removing cam caps. Give the fragility of my head cover bolts, though I suspect PO over tightened them, I would guess it better to not fudge with the cam caps when u do not have to.

These are the big shim over bucket type I think 29mm. The stock tool is fifty bucks. They also make a chopstick kind of thing that is not highly recommended. Being cheap and knowing that the springs do not have that mush force, i may improvise with a wooden tool.

You can get the motion pro batwing tool for $10-$30 on eBay. I need to get one when I get my 79 shaft to that point but I have a shop here that has them for about $25.

There's all kinds of goofy YouTube vids on changing shims with improvised tools. Many involve removing the plugs and shoving something in the cylinders to hold the valve open while the shim is changed. Sounds a bit risky to me.

Hello all,

I have some left over things to clean out. Will get pics up soon. Here's a list.

1. MKII ST Gas tank. SOLD
2. rear brake caliper in usable condition with stay
3. two front calipers, need rebuilding. Pistons are pitted
4. front brake hydaulic hose.
5. ST wire harness. This has the vetter connections
6. Vetter front fairing and hardware - good condition. has the flaps - fair condition
7. Front master cylinder. Needs to be rebuilt and one top screw is missing.
8. clutch perch
9. switch gear left and right, fair condition.
10, ST seat pan, some rust and tangs missing. Will need upholstery tack strip added to use again. Was a dual seat, but I think it is the same pan.

There's more, but these come to mine as the eh most desirable junk I have. :woohoo:

The vetter fairing does not have the headlight and bucket - it's lost.

I gotta say this is the slickest, easiest way to deal with access to valve shims. So easy i had three shims out and size verified in 10 minutes,

I ordered a 2.65 shim and will be able to swap to the other two valves. The 2.70 in there works for #1 intake and and that one a 2.75 works for the #3 intake. All three of these valves were at .06mm clearance with 270A, 275 and 280 shims, so they will be at .11mm when done All will be in spec from .08mm (2), .10mm (3) and .11mm (3). I'll have a left over 280 shim. Love it when the math works out in my favor. R

Here is video of using the ziptie for a valve clearance tool. Fukn bought a head cover gasket without the reed holes. Of course that didn't work. Sounded terrible. More waiting for the mailman. I found a 265 shim at the local dealer. 4$ Also pulled the forks and put new dust boots on. I found a 40mm set that fits dimensionally from Pyramid Parts in the UK. Ebay gets 35$ a piece and I only saw one for ST. I had one used the other was destroyed. Nice to have two goods ones on there. It has rain nearly 5" the last two days here. No fishing or MC riding.

Hello all, just in case folks had trouble sourcing fork dust boots for the ST like I did, Pyramid Parts in the UK has a set that dimensionally fits. The stock boot is 40mm ID X 60mm OD X 25mm H. NOS or used are crazy pricey on Ebay. Often I only found one and it was 30-75$. Pyramid Parts stock #DB5 Fork Dust Boots 40x55x30 mm fits well and was 18$ a pair +shipping 26$. The bottom was snug but fits. I thought that was a great deal and they look good. Pic tomorrow sometime. R
