1978 KZ750 Twin B3 that used to be a off road bike
02 Dec 2015 09:41 - 02 Dec 2015 10:03
Well, I picked this up a few weeds ago and thought I had better start a little progress tracking. I fell in love with the fact that there are not that many KZ750 Twins in my area, I don't think I have ever seen one on the road. The second thing was the exhaust, yes it is ugly but different none the lest.
The bike was found in a foreclosure property and has no key or title. Looked like most of the bike was there and after checking to see if the motor was seized (it was free) I picked her up.
The bars and the skid plate are different, plate is a heavy beast.

Re: Took off the gas tank and took the carbs apart
02 Dec 2015 09:45 - 02 Dec 2015 10:12
The carbs were not in that bad of shape. The tank on the other had was in ruff shape but not as bad as I have seen on some older bikes. I used YouTube and fond a site that showed how to use a battery charger and a anode to remove the rust and change the rust in the tank to a workable surface. I had to rig it that way to fake out the charger, placed the batter and the tank in the charging ckt.

Re: Starter cluch was next
02 Dec 2015 10:00
Starter clutch was out as with most of these older bike, I had a older V65 Magna that the same thing had happened. The KZ Twin broke one of the three pins and the springs were either broken or rusted away. Parts are in the mail, but that is a good thing as I had found a place were all kinds of oil had packed up.
After cleaning off the area and really taking a good look, seems that the bike had a chain brake or malfunction and broke out a part of the cover. One of the PO's tried to plug it with some type of caulk or something. Took the part off today and cleaned it all up. Was thinking of having a TIG weld done but I think with how close the rubber is that might not be a good idea. Sense there is really no presure in that area I am trying the old JB weld to see if that will hold.

Welcome aboard! That exhaust is pretty bad, but you can take comfort in knowing there was one member here who's KZ750 twin's exhaust was worse; much worse, and he did it on purpose.   Ed

I think that has the makings of a cool bike. The exhausts are hideous, but the basic idea is there and it could be altered and improved quite easily and then some paint or coating could transform it.

I'm thinking a 750 scrambler would be way cool. I bet Jemco would make some high pipes for it.

Re: Sodium Carbonate
03 Dec 2015 04:30
I have tried different tank seal kits in the past and with the ethanol gas here in Wisconsin, I fear it will fail. So I found a link that more or less walks you though the process:
I had a issue with my battery charger/maintainer, so I had to trick it and put a battery in the Ckt. If you have some of the older chargers I would guess it would work just hooking it up to the tank like the video shows.
This works great and I will use this treatment before I try a sealing kit. I am sure some of the kits work great but with how well this works, ease of use with no harsh chemicals, I like it.
The Arm and Hammer laundry detergent has the Sodium carbonate. Just make sure you measure out how much water your tank will hold, mix up the Sodium carbonate in a container very well.

Amazing how well the electrolysis works. I used it on an XZ650 tank I thought was too far gone. came out looking like new and no liner needed.
Cool project. Godawful exhaust
