Non Bling
31 Jan 2015 03:22
Any tips on polishing to a mat finish. I want to clean up a lot of the metalwork on my project. Nuts, bolts, brackets, etc.
Also my top yoke and engine cases. I dont want a bike covered in shiny bling though , just a clean flat mat finish.
I have a set of polishing mops for my drill with 2 bars of polish (white and red) which are very good for getting the crap off metalwork but its difficult not to go too far and ending up with a high gloss
How do I go about it ??

for a matt finish, after polishing just use wire wool or similar, I get it bright and shiny then then take the shine off it.
A satin brushed finish as seen on the engine casing emblems can be done also.
There are diy plating kits available that give a decent finish, these are a good company: copy cad in yellow chrommate, olive drab or black might be the finish you are looking for.

This won't be as durable as a quality chrome triple plate process, saying that some of my home plated bright nickel plate parts are still looking good 10 years later.
