Well it may not be the most exciting build thread to date or have any thing that you guys havent seen but I thought that I would put this on here to start to get involved with this site. I have been trolling on here for a little bit and am blown away about how bad ass you guys can make these old bikes look, Im amazed. Ive been looking at my old beat kz in the corner of the garage thinking someday. Well to day I decided that I will never get there if i dont start. Here is what I have to work with. I know its not much now but once it was a nice bike.

Believe it or not this pic is the same bike about 4 years ago when i had it in Hawaii.

It has a LONG history but the short story was it turned up on norfolks craigslist blown up and crashed with no title.cause it was still in my name a few months after that I ended up getting it back. Just too much history to let it go to the srap yard.

This is my first full on build. Ive had bikes and done some work and a few mods but this is going to be a learning experience so I apologize for dumb or ignorant questions in advance.

Myself and a friend started a facebook page 757 garage built motorcycles and I found a guy on there that has a k750 pile of parts that Im going to meet up with tomorrow. How much stuff can interchange? Carbs?

Got the motor out and the forks off and some of the other little bits that were still on it. Started stripping the frame from all the rattle can paint the other guy put on a wonderful original frame. So much paint I couldnt see the vin before I started stripping it. Thankfully they didnt mess with that.

So I was thinking that police bike would be something that was beat up a good bit and I could chop it up for the motor and little bits to but into my 77kz but Im not sure about this one. Ive been told it will need the basics like a carb clean and has been parked about 4 months cause if the bike was turned to the left it acted like the power was being cut to the coils. What do you guys think? Is there any rarity to this bike.

I don't know about rarity, but to me that bike looks pretty cool like it is. I suspect good running original police bikes will become scarce, if they're not already, because so many folks cut them to make the current fad (chopper, rat, cafe, etc.). I think it would be a fun bike the way it is and you could carry gear in those bags. If you fix up the other KZ using other parts you would have 2 totally different style bikes both of which have their own purpose and both of which are cool in their own way. Ed

Yeah Ed, I thought about that a little too. The guy sent me pics of some of the parts he had that werent in storage. There is a complete shaft drive motor thats minus a few valves. Im thinking I could take the engine that Im getting from him and the engine that came out of mine and doing a little mix and match to get a working motor.

If it's a shaft drive kicker motor the output shaft needs changed, (use the shaft drive gears theyre stronger) shift shaft and tranny cover then you have a mkii chain drive motor to use.

I didn't think police bikes came with fairings until 1981 - I have a 1980 and it doesn't have the bracket on the steering head to mount the fairing or the brackets on the crash bar. I also wonder if your 1979 is a MK11 motor like my 1980 is, That is a nice looking bike!

It came stock with the fairing. It has the mount on the steering head. I think its a MKII motor in the 79. I has the vents on the cam cover.

As far as the extra shaft drive motor. Since the gears are stronger Im looking at using that bottom end after converting it to chain drive. i have a couple questions.

Using the MKII bottom end and cyl can I put on a MKI head that doesnt have the valve cover vents? Are there any differences?
