Here's my 78 KZ1000 MAJOR PROJECT
19 Dec 2013 07:41
I am new to KZs and found this on my local craigslist for $400. This is exactly how I got it. I don't even know what model the bike is. I THINK its an LTD maybe??? The wiring is my biggest concern. I have wired up a lot of street rods but never a whole bike. The guy has cut on it but I can weld. I want to try to get it running 1st before I put a lot of time and money in it. He said it ran 2 years ago.

It's not an LTD by looking at the passenger peg brackets and the larger tank. It does look like it has LTD rims though.

Was that all there was, no clocks seat or headlamp? What about ignition switch and wiring? It can all be fixed but it depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to put in.
The wiring harness could be the biggest problem , but I think you can get a replacement harness from people like Z1 enterprises and Zpower .
It does amaze me the number of people out there who just dismantle/ruin a potentially great bike
Good luck keep us posted on progress.

Yes, I got most of the parts but nothing was labeled, just thrown into a big tote. I got a brand new wiring harness with it from Kawasaki dealer. Missing a headlight and ring and he cut the seat up. If its not an LTD, what is it?

It'd be either a Kz1000A2 or Kz1000A2A.

According to the link, it's a 1978 KZ1000 A2A. I need a set of body side covers. They are not in the tote.

I ordered my side covers from Z1Enterprises and they are nice. Order some grommets too so you won't lose them going down the road. I think I paid $56.00 each.

I bought many many many things from Z1 enterprises.
If for no other reason than to make sure they stay afloat and we always have parts.. I would use them (please).

The front disks are not 1978. The only drilled rotors in 1978 came on the Z1R. These staggered drilled holes came on 1979 bikes. Engine looks 78 or older.

Here's some pics of the parts. Just about everything is junk. Fenders are dented, gauge bezels are beat to death and the tach needle is broke loose. Do the fenders look correct for the A? What all bikes and years are the speedo and tach the same or will interchange at least?
