my kz900 build
31 Oct 2013 05:54
Gentlemen, been following this site for some time, looking at others rides and kinda jealous. So I have finally rounded up parts, time and money, especially money to start my build. 1976 KZ900 bought from original owner with 26K miles. Lucked out and got my hands on a 1990 GSXR 1100 with blown motor......pulled off suspension pieces I needed and sold the rest. Putting it out there......just wanted to get some opinions, suggestions or ?????? Let me know what ya think!! OH and a pic of what I started with.

Leon, I was hoping you would jump in on this!! I may need your expertise in a steering stem swap......I'm a welder NOT a machinist!!! LOL

I have a '95 Gsxr750 going in my Kz900. I didn't see a reason to swap stems. I used the appropriate bearings from AllBalls and everything seemed to work out fine.
Here is how many threads are left with the stock Gsxr stem. I feel that I get plenty of engagement into the nut.

Doug, a huge thanks!!!! I was just browsing the ALL BALLs site and found their fork conversion chart which includes GSXR1100 ...........I was wondering if a direct swap was possible from just ordering the proper bearings from them. NOW I have to find a Canadian supplier close to me!!! AGAIN...........big thanks

Thankyou...............for the vote of confidence as well. I have been putting off this build for almost a year now and finally pulled the trigger!! Hopefully mine will turn out half as nice as some of the awesome bikes I have drooled over on this site for most of the year.

Great start. I Would have some shock mounts welded on the seingarm and do a dual shock. That way the bike could b put back stock easily. Just an option.

Yes............you read my mind!! I have intentions of putting ZRX1100 rear shocks on this for the "old school dual shock" look and if at anytime a restoration would take place would make it easier to return to stock

Doug, a question for you. What bearing #'s did you order?? I've tried to order #99-3509-5 and #99-3521-5 upper and lower bearings from Z1 enterprises................they have no idea what these part #'s are. Do you have the part # of the bearing you ordered?? If so it would be greatly appreciated

Tom,
I think I ordered directly from AllBalls. It's been probably 5+ years at least since I ordered them so I can't remember for sure.

Doug, a quick question. I have just recieved my head bearings and have removed old bearings and races. How far up the steering head do you insert the bottom race? I have installed it flush and the GSXR stem is nowhere near long enough and seems the bearing race still can slide up the tube another 1/4" or more.
