Swap out some 700 parts for 900 parts :) An exhaust system and a set of pods along with a re-jet should wake that little fella up a bit. Perhaps a dynatek ignition upgrade as well ??

900 parts? doubtful. The stock electronic ignition is fine, but new Dyna coils & new spark plug wire set would be good. Pod filters? good luck. 4-1 exhaust system? yes, but some are of poor quality. Anything that fits the KZ650/700/750, ZN700/750, ZR750 (~1993 & ~ 2002)(air cooled). You may have to fab up a muffler hanger.

Pod filters are not an upgrade. Be prepared to spend lots of time fiddling with them trying to make your KZ700 run as well as it does with the airbox. This is particularly true sine your bike came equipped with CV carbs.

IMHO, the best upgrade you can do, and the most logical (to me) starting point before making any changes is to perform a top to bottom tune-up on the bike and see how well it runs. If you get it running as well as the day it left the showroom floor you should be quite happy with its performance. Ed

+1 on the tune-up.
But any time you increase the engines ability to breath is an increase.
The jetting will have to be adjusted to match. There are jet kits exactly
for that purpose. They might not be spot on. Because of parts used
could be a little different. Fuel used can and is different in different
areas. Then there is altitude to take into consideration also. Pods do have
some drawbacks, they are affected to a small degree by wind and rain.
A sudden big side gust and sitting outside in the rain all day do hamper
performance.

As for people saying 'you have to mess with your jetting to get it to run
like stock' . I say THE FACTORY DID IT. Look at the '79 KZ1000s, all three
models. Especially the MKll and the ST. Same engine, same carbs, why is
the jetting different.?

And another thing, use K&N or Uni filters.
All the others are junk, especially when it comes
to CV carbs.
