I'm start to clean and go through things I can handle with my limited mechanical abilities, and was wondering if anyone knew what this cracked item is under my gas tank.

Ignition coil. What bike is this? Will it even run?

That is usually caused by leaving the ignition on while the bike is not running. If you need to work on lights etc. turn the kill switch off.

Z1Enterprises.com has replacement ignition coils. If your bike has points ignition, now would be the time to look into getting electronic ignition. Maintenance can be a nuisance, so the upgrade would mean less work afterwards... no points to fiddle with.

1980 kz1000 B, yes it ran but stumbled a bit. i want to get my carb rebuilt and clean the rest of the stuff myself, today i stopped in the only salvage yard I know about (sky cycle salvage, fitchburg, mass.), and they were so nice, educated patient and were a huge help. everyone around me charges 400-600 for a carb rebuild, but i dont feel they are that confident or have done any before. so i will probally see if i can have wired george do it, it looks like that all he does. I just ordered a manual from ebay/new zealand. and my next step is a compression test. so i dont know if i will buy one or lug it to someone to do one, do u know if they rent those? thanks

Go to your friendly AutoZone. They have a tool loan program and can lend you compression gauge. They will put a temporary balance on your credit card but then clear it once you bring the tool back. I think you can hang onto it for 7 days or so.
