I did some trading and picked up this 1981 (built 6-80) KZ550 LTD.
The bike is super clean and runs great. But, there are some things I would like to change.

It is a start in the right direction, I think.

Next is to do something about that big seat. I want the back part to be as low as I can get it.

There is a rise in the rear of the seat pan that is ceeping me from getting the seat low enough. So I cut it out and welded another flat piece.

Now I just need to find the time to get her in to the shop and have the new seat made.

I am looking over options for the exhaust. I would really like an Kerker Pipe, because that is what was cool in 1981. But they are hard to come by. Im looking at a ZX600 pipe also. Im not really sure what I am going to do.

That seat is definitely looking better already. Prior to cutting down, definitely looked like the flight deck of an aircraft carrier! Keep the pics coming and welcome! that would be the perfect bike here in Hawaii.

Nice work so far.
What is that other bump in the seat pan, just forward of the flat you welded in?
For the battery?
Would be nice to loose that too.

Have the seat in the shop today. It should have it back by the end of the week.

I got my seat back today. It is still taller in the back than I would like. But it has an old school look that is so much better than the way it came.

Before

After

Thanks,

Tim
