1982 KZ1000 CSR

Hello all! I figured I'd start a project thread so I could share some pics and get some advice :P

First, the bike as is:

My first task is getting a new tank. I don't have the savvy to repair. Might not even be possible. I'm pretty sure inside is rusted out thanks to a gas cap that doesn't close. There are at least 2 holes that leak gas on the seams.

I found this tank , but its for an LTD and I have a CSR and I'm not sure how different the models are. Looks like it would fit, but I'd rather get some confirmation before spending that cash.

Thanks for reading,
Z

What do you think a tank like this is worth?

a good deal would be a $100.00 but he will will prolly get his 3 out of it.

so if you needed one you wouldn't be getting raped paying the $300.00 for it.

depends how much and quick you need it.

Just keep your eyes open on the classifieds here, Craigslist, and EBay and you'll find a good deal on a 81+ tank. Also, remember that though you want a great deal on a tank, really your comparing it to the cost to repair your tank which is the other option, an option that will be much more expensive.

There are parts hiding everywhere for these bikes, so keep looking....

Yeah, that's a great point about comparing the cost to the alternative of fixing up my tank.

Also, how much time I want to spend... The weather is great here in Georgia, and I just want to get this baby up and running.

I actually bought that police tank, we haggled for a bit and settled on 175$.

Should be waiting for me when I get back from memorial day mini-vacation. :)

New tank success. I swapped over the gas cap (after cleansing it and unseizing the lock) and the petcock. The fuel sensor part (I guess that's what it is.) came with the new tank, but the connector isn't what is on my bike. Maybe a difference between the police version and my csr? They are both '82 KZ1000 tanks.

I shooped the panels to black and white to go with the tank. And I don't know what to do about the headlight, seeing as the stock headlight is inside the vetter.

Headlight. You could get the needed parts on ebbaayy. The 82 headlight bracket is different & has more chrome than the 81, but I think they are interchangeable. A number of bikes use the same brackets. The 82 kinda mimics the earlier KZ headlight ears. Alternatively, you could get aftermarket headlight brackets, but the stock setup might provide better alignment & adjustment for the headlight beam.

Ebay headlight parts... I'll keep an eye out. I'm a little out of commission because I had to cancel my card. Somebody decided they'd treat themselves to $100 worth of stamps on my dime.

Also,

what sorcery do you use to remove the fuel level sensor?

pull the rubber cap off and there should be a row of screws around the edge holding it in.

here is a link to a parts diagram showing what your working with.
