'80 KZ750G Twin to Cafe Project

Purchased a 1980 KZ750G Twin to convert cafe racer style. I am coming up with a design I like and my boyfriend is doing the work. :) Great forums here, have found lots of great info and inspiring projects! Thought we would share ours.

The Teardown
Taking it apart, figuring out design, troubleshooting issues. So far it's not in too bad shape, the starter clutch needs replacement as do the points. Leaking some oil. No front brake, rear brake just barely working. Currently has Harley pipes.

In progress
  • Replaced battery
  • Ordered points
  • Ordered starter clutch
  • Orderd all gaskets
  • Ordered a 2-1 exhaust

Figuring out paint scheme, how much to modify the frame, working on the rear fender this weekend, considering handlebar style, and want to redesign the entire dashboard layout.

Thanks all for the welcome! :)

Well, my boyfriend and I get a bit obsessive about projects, so it's end of week 1 but a bit more to report.

More Teardown
Removed meters, found the bike has been dropped – lots – meter bracket is broken but usable. Some of the other covers will have to be replaced. Some corrosion in the wiring harness connectors (explains intermittent lights on the ride home). Overall in good shape, frame, forks, clutch, transmission are all okay.

In Progress
  • Have discussed and decided on the tank/seat/rear fender design
  • Designing dash based on stock with stock parts but giving it a more modern look
  • Purchased the rear fender and a blank stock seat pan; designing a custom seat
  • Cut the tail off
  • Currently de-rusting the tank

Vix, if the busted bracket does not work for your changes, I have a stock meter bracket you can have for the shipping.

Jim,

That is extremely kind of you to offer! We secured everything and replaced the missing screws, it's much more stable but the meters may still be wobbly when the bike is on and in motion. Sending you a PM...
