Relay Ride preperation, gettin the KZ into shape

My pipe arrived this morning

Couldnt wait, had to put it on lol. I've done way too much the last while, gonna go take my pain meds and Veg on the couch for the reat of the day, damn shoulder.

Really nice looking wheels and the rest of the bike as well. Lube the chain before you hit the road.

Was lookin at her, and the polished engine covers were throwin off the look. So pulled the spare engine out and stole its covers, prepped n' painted em BLACK. Ahhhhh thats better.

Almost finished.

Had a few snags along the way, screwed up my decals by creasing them...DOH.
So had to mask it off and paint stripes on.

Nice job, you are inspiring me to get off my ass and paint the L-3 I've had for several years. The bike I have is a repaint and looks ok but when the PO repainted it he didn't use fine line tape so the striping is not as sharp as it should be. I've always wanted to repaint it in the ELR color scheme. Do me a favor and save the paint codes you used, your bike looks spot on color wise.

I'll have a look and see what codes the blue and white were. The green is code J6, 1970 Dodge Go-Green or 1970 Plymouth Sassy Grass.

The green was done in base clear, but the stripes were done with a sherwin williams waterborne system. We had the same bleeding effect you described, I had to pin stripe the edges around the blue to get a crisp line...main problem was where the blue and white meet.

I gotta say, its a much bigger job than I was expecting. I screwed up the decals, so had to paint on the stripes, then the colours bled...so sanded the stripes off and redid them again....and it BLED again, so pined the damn thing lol.

The green base coat was very translucent too, took 8 coats to cover. Then 2 coats of clear, then stripes, then 3 more coats of clear. Still have to cut it and polish.

Oh did I mention I hate bodywork and painting. the stripes on the fairing are not to my liking, looks like they are nose up. But after all this BS I said piss on it, I am not sanding it all off to redo it AGAIN lol.

I hate to ask, but what are you doing with the old pipes? I might have interested if you want to sell.
