Operation: Pile of Parts

I finally got a kz. I bought a honda cb for my first bike because my pops and I always lusted after them. After riding a friend's kz and many near purchases over the last year or two, I picked up this pile of parts.

Picture proof:

KZ650 frame.
KZ750 motor.
KZ1000 swingarm.
Multiple unlaced wheels.
Boxes and boxes of parts.

Originally I had planned to really spend my time making everything perfect on this one. The thing is, I'd rather be riding it than polishing it. Don't get me wrong, I love time in the garage, but to what end? Riding.

So a gracious friend, who I believe is on this forum, gave me some spoked wheels and a set of carbs. Originally I had wanted to run mags with a rear disc. In the interest of budget, and my failure in finding an 18" rear mag, I will be using these. I'll keep my eyes open for mags in case I want to swap them out in the future.

So, first objective:

Clean the wheels up. New rubber. Assemble the front forks with fresh fork oil. Drop the engine in.
Roller.

I have decided to use the stock 650 swingarm. With the shortened mounting point, I was unsure if the stock bearings would still fit. The 650 swinger I have has good bearings in it. Just needs a good cleaning and a coat of fresh paint. I'll save the kz1000 swingarm for when I switch to those mags I wanted down the road.

My wife suggested I turn our sunroom into a workshop since I don't have a garage. Naturally, I did not argue with her. I went and bought some storage and got right to work on it.

As you can see, this room served no real purpose in our house.

So, I cleared it out and added the storage shelf I bought.

I lined one shelf with cardboard and zip tied it down. This should keep the cans and bottles from toppling over on the wire surface. It'll also collect any leakage.

Like so:

Add some swag:

Some heavy parts in the corner:

An assembly area:

Some bins of parts, labeled by make and category. A bit cluttered, since I was still labeling ziploc bags of parts at the time. (Yeah, I even labeled the baggies.)

Put the top triple together. Looking clean. Ordered black powdercoated bars for it today. Black on black on black.

The swingarm was soaking in degreaser and solvent all day today. I'll strip it, clean it and paint it tonight. After curing it with some heat, I'll install it with the cleaned up shocks.

I ordered bars, headlight ears, fork seals, dust boots, bearing grease, and some other essentials today. Ordering tires next.

Ordered tires!

I went with the Shinko 712. I have them on my other bike, and really like them.
Plus, the value is such that could not be denied. Just under 100 bones for both, with free shipping.

I haven't updated in a while. Oops.

New fork seals/oil.
Rolling chassis assembled.
Motor mounted.

There you have it. I'll just keep bolting parts on in my spare time.

Carbs are apart for cleaning.
