Z1 900 mono shock project
24 Nov 2011 21:51
Heres some quick pics of my project, 75 z1 900 motor, frame was a junkyard find, swingarm, frontend, and brakes and wheels are from a 1988 honda hurricane 600, hope to have done by spring? Funny story the the frame and motor that came in
it, the frame had been stretched and raked with a locked up motor with a good back cut tranny, a buddy was at the scrapyard dumping a old lawn mower and seen it layin in a pile, he traded the lawn mower for it, I got it for getting his HD goin this spring, so ive piecing it together,

little update: z1 motor runs, good compression and popped right off (who knows how long its been since it ran last, as it was a parts bike motor)with the all the ignition parts out of the 79 kz1000st parts bike I got,the rebuilt mikuni 28's with pods and pro pipe, needs some heavy tuning but it runs,(only thing I had in the garage for gas was VP110) front forks are fighting me, i put some seals in them, and added spec oil and air (air over oil forks, damn honda)forks dive and dont rebound, I can bottom them out by hand? still workin on a brake pedal and mounting the honda rear master cylinder. Im gonna try to run the honda 600 sprockets see how it goes? Did the electrolosis trick on the tank will get some pics up soon!

Yep, these big bore Kawasakis just want to run. My 1000 fired right up after sitting for at least 15 years on the first try. Took a couple of seconds for the gas to work it's way from the tank, fill the float bowls and whammo, we have ignition. I had it bench synced, idle screw setting was a guess, timing was set static, jetting was a guess due to pods and 4 into 1, but the old girl just wanted to run. Damn good feeling too.
Good luck sorting out your forks. I would guess that something internal is wrong if you can bottom them out by hand. That should not be possible. Needs to be able to support 700-800 lbs of bike and rider under hard braking which is well more force than you can generate by compressing forks by hand. Unless you are the Incredible Hulk. In which case I don't want to make you angry, I won't like you when you're angry. :silly:

Like the build but, isn't there a couple frame rails missing? Speaking of the 2 running from the neck back under the backbone, the rails that the coils and tank mount rubbers mount on. That frame but be a little flexy without them.

I'll be watching this one since I happen to have 1000 Hurricane frame front end and wheels that I was thinking of using on my bike.
