Well I picked this bike up last Sunday. Looked pretty ugly with the fairing and the luggage box, but oh well those are off now. For plans, right now I plan to put clip-ons on it, and update the controls with something newer. Due to the vetter fairing beings somewhat ghetto rigged on there, the wiring in the headlight has a bunch of crimped connections that will have to go. Basically, I plan on rewiring most of the bike. As for the rest of what I plan on doing I haven't decided yet, I am still looking through as many build threads as I can to get ideas. Also, what is the best place to get clip-ons for the bike? Well, enough rambling, time for some pics.

I had the same fairing and hard saddlebags on my 1000 LTD when I bought it. I removed them as well. The wiring in the headlight was not too bad to get back in order. Just the turn signals and headlight plug and back in business. Good luck with the project.

It's your bike, so what you do must = what you like. If it was mine I would shed the touring stuff and semi-apes for sure, but I wouldn't put clip-ons on an LTD if I had any plans to actually ride it.

The LTD is a "cruiser" style bike, especially looking at the rear wheel, seat, etc. Clip-ons are going to not only make it look like it has a split personality, but also IMHO will make it very uncomfortable to ride given the resulting footpeg/seat/tank/clip-on physical relationship. If it was mine I would use handlebars of some sort, not clip-ons as I think the bike's geometry would really make reaching clip-ons a stretch. Just sayin' Ed

Ya, I see what you mean, but I have been thinking rearsets, and trying to find a bigger rim for the back. I was also thinking about an 750L (i think) tank for it, the tank I have has a few dents in it so I figured I'd change it up.

Given potential frame differences I don't know if it's possible, but it would be cool if you could shoot for the look of the KZ750 in the pic below only maybe with a round headlight:
