KZ1000 Bobber for a college student

Hey all,

Trying to work on the project where I can.

Got the frame mocked back up for welding. Not going to post pics till that's done though.

Since I did this with my 81 GS850, I thought I'd try it again. I want to replace the stock mufflers, cause they are just not bobber like whatsoever. Went around to a few dealership to see if they had any throw away mufflers laying around the shop. Was striking out for a little, but patience helps out. Came across this small chopper shop down the street, Iron Horse Caroe who really helped me out. They handed me over these bad boys...for FREE. Their in great shape, literally nothing wrong with them. Great people there.


When I pull the clutch, it's kind of sloppy. Lever pulls fine, but doesn't have any tension to bring it back. Have tried adjusting the cable but didn't help out really. Pulled the cover off to see what's going on. Maybe this spring is worn down?? Any ideas?

I don't know about the spring, but you definitely want to lube your cables. Great find on the slip-ons.

your spring is either good or broken.(i've never encountered one of these springs that has just weakend)
we can see it is not broken, (they don't call me holmes for nuthin :silly: )
so i would suggest taking your clutch pusher out of your cover and washing it out with some solvent.then give it a re-grease and as chaotic mentioned lube your cables.

something is dragging (capt. obvious again :whistle: )and it is a simple setup.
soo cable,clutch pusher,or pivot,unless you have broken pressure plate springs under the clutch cover on the other side.

these are great for lubing cables easy and fairly clean.worth having for sure.

Supposed to be a screw and locknut that are used to adjust the clutch push-rod. Are they missing? Is the push-rod missing?

It's not the light duty spring, imo, as that spring provides minimal tension needed to hold the clutch lever into its perch so the lever won't vibrate due to the slight required slack in the cable.

Thanks for the tips gents. Will be looking into it.

The locknut and screw are there n working fine. Hopefully I don't need to look into the clutch bucket.

Clutch push rod adjustment is sometimes incorrectly performed by first turning the adjustment screw the wrong way.

Ball and ramp style -- first turn screw counter-clockwise until it stops, then turn clock-wise 1/2 turn, then tighten the lock nut.

Earlier model with screw type adjuster is turned the opposite way.

Hey guys,

Got some work done today which felt so good. Love getting the hands dirty more then once a week.

Figured out my clutch lever problem. The cable itself was pretty clean, but cleaned it anyways. In the previous pic pictured with the spring, I cleaned that all up REALLY well. My uncle has a special kerosene cleaning sink for parts like this. Wish I took a pic of it before I got new grease in there. What it came down to was a little time and patience getting all the adjustments correct in 3 different areas. Thanks to Patton for the advice, helped much. So all is well there now.

In the following pic, you can kinda see how the frame was rewelded at a different angle. Many probably wont be able to tell a difference, but it's ok cause I do and this baby is mine. =]

And can anyone spot the turn signals I mounted????

I'm not sure how I feel about this fender in this position with the flare at the end. I have another fender on my GS pictured in the 1st post which could fit and doesn't have this flare. Let me know your opinions cause I'm on the edge about it. Color wont make a difference since the'll get painted.

Fender looks good. I actually like the flare. Almost makes it look like a fin.

No cutting needed. Fit all together like it was made for the carbs

Love The PVC used it as an intake for a single carb conversion on my Goldwing Still going strong after 2 seasons.

BTW, I like the flipped clubman handlebars...looks pretty cool
