78' Z1R...so close yet so far away.

I have a 78' KZ1000-D1 Z1R for over a year now and quite sadly, the story of how this brilliant bike came into my hands was just too good to be true.

Everything looked almost perfect from the outside with some "minor stuff" to be worked on....and so I was told by the bloke who sold me the bike...

I've got everything almost there...except for a couple of critical items like the gas tank, fuel gauge, fuel tap assembly, carburetor assembly.

Can anyone out there who's been in my shoes on sourcing for parts please advise me?...

Looking at the pics of the fuel gauge and fuel tap assembly, one can only imagine the condition of the tank (which already shows signs of bubbling after respraying a week ago)..

Sure could do with some good advise...

Sad to say but e-bay is a decent place to start but beware, there is a lot of people out there that sell a lot more Z1R parts than there were Z1R's built if you get my drift. A reputable source for parts is Redline cycles, a bit pricey but you will get the right parts.

i have to ask if the tank was freshly painted without anyone looking inside ? :sick:

as you have learned z1r tanks are hard to find.although they do turn up occasionaly.

you could do like jaffasaki did and use a tank from a j model/mk11 .







they do not look to outta place on z1r's in my humble opinion.

a pingle will take care of the petcock. z1enterprise can hook you up on it.

my fuel sending unit has never worked well enough to depend on it.you can cap it off with a flat plate.
i use my odometer for a fuel guage.can you clean the rust outta the tank and then pressure it up to check for leaks?there have been some pretty crappy tanks repaired and used.

rob the tunnel out of a good kz,mk11,j-model square tank and fab the rest :whistle: .

as long as your carbs don't have any broken pieces they can probably be rebuilt.

Really appreciate the kind advise from all of you...Thanks a lot! Will continue with eBay and definitely spend some time reviewing what redline has to offer.

To be frank, I was waiting for someone to ask what I was thinking spraying a tank with the internals looking the way it did...and the answer is I was so duped by the mechanic I bought the bike from:angry:...and that was about 12 months ago...he warranted the condition of the bike and as part of the sales agreement, he was to make good the tank (which he actually offered to have it sprayed while warranting the epoxy coat) as well as tune the carbs (among a whole host of promises) but what was suppose to take 2 weeks ended up taking close to 11 months! Promises after promises and excuses after excuses on all the delays...nothing was done. In fact, when the bike was handed over to me, it was in a poorer condition than it was during the time when we were negotiating...eventually he just "disappeared"...

And that's why now I have treat it as a project..
