What's next? was created by Serpent7
I have a 79 KZ1000 st,, which I just got up and running. It's pretty much all stock accept for the 4 into 1 used exhaust, sport handle bars, and side bags removed. I changed all the fluids, bleeded the brakes, rebuilt the carbs with a car kit, drained the gas and put in new gas and the bike came right on after sitting 5 years with PO! I still have some fine tuning to do with the carbs but all in all the bike runs very well. However, it has a rough idel and dies if you come to a stop. At around 2500 rpms it sometimes shoots flames out of the exahust. As cool as it may sound I dont think it should be doing that, so Im guessing (I dont have much experience with motorcycles) its running rich! Al it makes loud popping sounds while riding every now and then. My question is I want to get it running right so where should I start now? tune up kit? accel super coil kit?

First thought is your running lean not rich...

Does it pop out the exhaust on decelerations?
example: Driving at 65mph, let go of the throttle, does it pop-popity-pop....?

Before worrying about jetting, have a vacuum leak at the intake manifolds?

Biggest thing to accomplish first.... CARB SYNC!!! ;)

Pop out the plugs and confirm their condition...
How to read sparkies correctly...

"However, it has a rough idel and dies if you come to a stop. "...

Turn your pilot screws "Rich" a 1/4 turn and see if that takes care of your idle issue...

Speaking of which, where do you have the pilot turns at now, OEM spec?

Regarding the Pods, did you just install these?
If so then jetting most likely required as well....

Same with the 4-1 exhaust, is this a new addition?

Like already said, if you have K&N pod filters and a 4-1 exhaust, you have changed the fuel requirements of the engine drastically.

This means the carburetors require tuning in order not to damage the engine further.
If you have rebuilt the carbs, then you should be fairly familiar with them, and this will likely be not too difficult.

My best recomendation for persons not familiar with tuning carbs is to simply purchase a Jet Kit for your bike. The kit comes with all the tools and parts required to jet the carbs exactly for your situation. if you start just buggering/guessing with jets, you will spend a long time fiddling with it, and not riding.

Contact Z1 Enterprises for which kit to order. they are very helpful/accomidating.

GL!

PS. On my bike, I have to completely remove one of the mixture screws to make it pop a flame out the exhaust.
Check for it...

rough idle and dies if you come to a stop --- would suspect pilot circuits and/or valve clearances.

Good Fortune! :)

I concur with my compatriots, lean throughout the rpm range, and a possible plugged idle circuit/valve clearance problem.
