kz900 resto

I just picked up a '76 kz900, would like some advice as if I should remove the engine to have it rebuilt. The bike has 18K miles, it's not seized up. Nothing was modified, I purchased it from the original owner. Last run the summer of '96. Been sitting in the shed since. Also the gas tank is about 1/2 full, any suggestions as to how to clean that out.
All your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome. I doubt the engine needs rebuilding. Just get the old gas out of the tank, petcock, and carbs and fire it up.

Great find!
I agree with Roy. For giggles you could do a compression test, but it would have to have been beat on pretty bad at 18k to need a rebuild, especially if it was kept original.
If the tank is rusty, there is an article on the site on using muriatic acid and phosphoric acid to strip out the rust. Planning on doing the same to mine shortly.

If the tank is rusty, just get the stuff from Harbor Freight. I just used it and it worked good. If you need the name just let me know.

Charge the battery, change the oil, throw some fresh gas in her with a bottle of Seafoam and fire her up...

Best of luck :)

(edit) Here's the link for you for the Evaporust.
