Are those clearcoat runs down the cardboard around the sidecovers? I should have warned you Josh, Clear shoots different than primer or basecoat. You can't really lay it down thick and flat, or the weight of it will sag and run on vertical surfaces. The best approach is to spray medium coats, leaving an orange peel texture, and spraying 4-5 coats, then color sanding the clear smooth. You can still sand runs out of the clear if you get some, you just want to use a sanding block with 1500 grit sandpaper to level them out. I would be VERY impressed if you didn't get a single run your first time shooting clear :cheer:

what happens to the drips on the tails lower edge?...rookie question

.\i bought all the stuff to spray the gpz and others(not MKII or A4) cept a inline water trap,it s last...and got a 3 hr video...friggin cold here still..

..excellent quickie paint booth...if it works...it works.,...i have to make mine outside so will use a quickie 2x6 skeleton and something quick like yours then just break it down and toss the plastic....

the pics blow up nice to full screen too.....

lat question...where the parts rest...bucket thin rim...cardboard (not mount pins though)anyways where the part touches there will be a drip..do you sand that smooth and call it good..???

i thought of building a little shoe tree and using some blind mounts to "hang" the items in the air when i do mine

I was un-prepared for how that clear was going to spray. It's so sticky. I'm sure I'll have a ton of runs. I tried to get it to level, and realized that I had it too thick. Live and learn.

I just figure that all the drips and runs can be carefully sanded out. I knew ahead of time that I would have to color sand and buff, so my plan is to fix any errors that way.

So if I shot it thinner and it had considerable orange peel, would that level itself somewhat as it set?

OK, I blew up the sidecover pic.........I see you do have some clear drips along the edges. To remove, use a new razor blade while the clear is still green (after 24hr of cure) and cut most of the drip off. Be careful you don't tear the clear....if you even think it will tear, hold off, try and take a smaller bite or wait another day.

Having done a bit of painting...years ago but again this spring...I can say that you have done a great job for the first time. Painting is a learn as you go deal and you are catching on very quick. Feels good once you see that paint going on and the parts start taking shape doesn't it?! Parts look great...you should be proud of how they have turned out! Very nicely done!

I had similar overspray issues the first time I sprayed clear, although I think it was more trying to compensate for a gun that wasn't cleaned properly. Adam seems to have the solution for you, just be methodical (as you have been) and it will turn out great...

Thanks guys. I just got off the phone with Adam, and I have a game plan to fix the runs. I'm confident that any issues that I have can be repaired. More than anything, I have just made more work for myself.

I have been treating the paint work as a learning experience, and I learned a lot today. The worst part is waiting for the clear to dry so that I can even touch the parts. Next lesson: color sanding and buffing.

The clear dried enough that I could pick up the parts. So here's a preview of things to come:

The good news is that the side covers came out really well. Aside from the drips along the edges, the finish is very smooth.
