No, I think he means that if you are restoring it, then stock tires would be best (4.25X18). Anything wider tends to rub...you can put a wider swingarm in that accepts a wider tire but it will take a bit of work to adapt it.

dont forget you might need an off-set front sprocket and maybe a differant drive chain to match the rear sproket.

Use the search function and do some research throughout this forum. A gs 1100 swingarm from the early 80's seesm to be widely accepted as a good choice.

S E A R C H -function is very helpful. Plenty on J/R -frames out there with swapped swings. My ELR now has a ZRX1100 ´98 rear and Öhlins dual-shocks. You can find the whole story here on "Projects" -> "Swing swap....."
Z1000R ´83...Slightly modified...

I believe a FJ1100 swingarm might work also. And welcome. Pics are a must.

z1000j you say, south africa, you say, wider swingarm, welcome,we can and will help.
check out roynor's(kzrider member) project thread.he is installing a suzuki tl 1000 swingarm on his z1000j.there are several swingarms that can be modified to work and as has already been suggested the search function should reveal lots of info.
z1109rfin has a thread on his bike and he installed a zrx 1100/1200 swingarm.
i took the raod less traveled and custom built my own swingaram out of 4130 cro-mo,to accept a 2000 r1 rear wheel and tire and brake system.i too kept the dual shocks.
hth,here is my bike.
