I am looking into buying a z1 for parts, and I have a pic. The owner refers to it as a 1980 kawi 1000. I just wanted to check with the guru's here to see if they could give me any more details on what this is.

Hello Jimbo302...the bike looks (without seeing the confirming motor and frame VIN's) like a KZ1000B model (LTD) with an aftermarket kerker header. The VIN's will tell all...and it isn't a Z1:)

It looks like a 79-81 LTD, but can't be shure without better pictures of the motor. If it is the second Gen. KZ1000 it has the bastard motor with the odd crank shaft and cam drive system.

79-80 b3/b4 would be my guess.if its an 80 ltd that would be a good thing because it would have big pin crank which is worth a few bucks to the drag racing types;)
Still recovering, some days are better than others.

So it is an ltd, I assumed it was, but the rear fender and some other odds and ends had me guessing. I am new to these bikes, what makes a Z1?

The '80 ltd engine is undesirable?

To answer both your questions, the 1980 KZ1000B4 is, arguably the most desireable of the early style 1000 LTD's as it has the MKII motor (I won't go into the definition here) and a Z1 model is a 903cc bike made for export from late 1972 ('73 year model) to mid-1975. All 903 and 1015cc bikes after that (1976-1980) are referred to as KZ's in North America and Z's elsewhere.
