FrankenBike is alive and legal!!
My story .... Two months ago I bought an 82 KZ550 LTD, and with it an identical 81 parts bike. Most of each bike was in boxes, and my mission was to get one good runner out of two. I spent most of my project time figuring out what I needed on the 82, and using whatever I could from the 81. I spent $300 for both bikes initially, and about $250 on new parts. I accessorized with a luggage rack and windshield for a few more bucks.
The last time the 82 was legally registered was 1999. The last registered owner of the 82 signed off the title as a seller on June 2001, and I am the third owner since then. So I had to go through all of the red tape and hassle to get the bike legally titled and registered in my name. Done. Then it was my turn. The last time I had a motorcycle license was in 1980. I took the Texas Motorcycle Safety Course this past weekend, and passed my written test today. Done. The last piece of the puzzle was to get FrankenBike inspected. So today after work I rode it to the inspection station (I was the only one there, so I pulled it right in). Results : PASSED!!
So the bike and I are LEGAL!!
