WOW!
A girl, a lady, a female type person!
And wants a KZ 1000P!

Now that I've gotten up off the floor.

Welcome! the only thing I would say about police bikes is make sure the mileage is not above 50K. At about 70K the top end needs rebuilding. You want to enjoy it for a while before you have to put more money in it. Look for oil leaks, And as stated, look for scratches on the pipes and the chrome to see if its been dropped. Great bikes! Well a hidely hodely to you too, Erin. I'm glad to see more females getting interested in the KZ's. I'm glad to see you here and as one of the few (VERY FEW) females here, I want to let you know that this place is friendly and relaxed. Problems are pretty few and far between. If you need advice or assistance don't ever hesitate to post about it. The guys around here tend to bend over backwards to help the ladies out and as I see already, you are getting real good treatment.

Ride safe and make sure to post lots of pics of whichever bike you choose.

I can feel the estrogen levels rising at KzRider already!

Take care,
Abbie

OK, I found a 1999 in excellent shape with 14K miles on the clock. Is $3000 a good price for such a bike?

Thanks again for all the help, folks!

Welcome to KZr Erin.

That '99 you just posted a pic of looks really nice.
B)

One thing you might want to question the seller about is if it's an Ex-Police bike, why such low mileage.
Most Police bikes get "retired" between 35K and 50K. And then usually see quite a few more miles doing escort duty (funerals processions, etc.) before being lovingly rebuilt by a KZ/Police bike enthusiast or put out to pasture.

One thing in that pic that concerns me, is I notice some smears/stains on the left hand exhaust pipe. It appears that either the transmission output shaft and/or shift shaft seal is leaking.
Not to worry if that's the case, as it's a fairly easy and cheap repair. If at all possible though, I'd have the seller remove the outer cover to inspect the mission cover (it's the cover that the transmission output and shift shafts exit through) to see if there is any crankcase or mission cover damage (as can be caused if the drive chain breaks while the bike is being ridden).

I hope all this info doesn't deter you from wanting that bike. I just wanted to give you a heads up of what it could possibly be that stained that exhaust pipe.

OK, I went and test drove it today. Took a little getting used to the toe/heel shifter, but caught on quickly. I absolutely LOVE the bike. I am going to buy it.

It was down at least once -- the fairing is scraped on the edge and the rack around the bags was scraped and rusted a little bit. Other than that, it had power! I liked it. The engine needs a good polishing and the bike needs to be washed, but other than that, looks good.

Any recommendations on how to wash a motorcycle? I know that with cars when you wash the engine bay you need to cover certain things so water doesn't hurt them.... Any good products to get the metal parts as shiny as the bike up there ^^^ ?

The emergency light lenses are gone, so the front of the bike needs two lenses. I was thinking of converting them into fog lights with either clear or very lightly tinted amber lenses. Any recommendations or ideas on how to do that? Any idea what size the lens is so I can get some replacements? Argh, so many questions!

Thanks all!

Another question: the bag/box compartment thingy over the rear wheel is gone, there is just a flat metal plate there. Any chance of removing it and adding a second seat, or would it be better to put some kind of bag/compartment there for storage?

Any recommendations as to brands and/or where to get something like that?

Thanks again!
