rebuilding 1982 KZ250
11 Sep 2006 09:57
Hey all,
I've finally gotten started on my project, which is taking what I can from a 1980 KZ250 and applying it to a 1982 KZ250 that's in better shape, and trying to make one runner out of two non-runners.
Question 1: I'm in Missouri. Neither of the junker bikes I have have titles, though I have a bill of sale for the 1982. Have any of you any experience titling bikes? How difficult is it to get salvage title or builder's title?
Question 2: It appears that the starter motor on the 1982 KZ250 is completely shot, burnt out, and the 1980 is different enough that it can't be a donor. Any of you know a good source for a working 1982 KZ250 starter?
It's good to be finally wrenching on this thing. Thank goodness the hot summer is now a memory.
Thanks,
Chris

That's a good looking bike.
I haven't made up my mind on the color yet -- the paint job on the tank's not very good any more, so I'm even considering wirewheeling the thing and going with a clearcoat brushed metal look.
First things first, I guess -- let's get the thing up and running.![:-) :-)](/media/kunena/emoticons/9.png)
Still calling around and looking for a 1982 starter motor. I kind of hate to spend $150 on a rebuilt one if I can get a working one for less than $50. Keeping my eye on ebay.

There are a few of us around... actually, the 1983 KZ250 LTD Belt drive I'm in the process of re-building
is the only bike my 5ft 2in wife feels comfortable on, as she can stand flat footed at a stop unlike my Honda CB450T.
Electric starters for the KZ250 LTD... part #21163-1036 are almost extinct... mine is gone... so I don't even have one to re-build and new ones are over CDN$300.00 delivered. The one thing I have been told... don't know for sure...is this electric starter runs backward to most others.???
A carb for this model is not the easiest to find either..part #16001-1592 for the US model and #16001-1593 for the Canadian model... a CV36 carb.
If anyone knows where I can pick any of these up please drop me a line... could use the help..
Here's a pix of the wee beastie... the rider is a factory option... next one will have a face.

Did you by any chance keep the old starter?
After paying for and waiting 4 weeks my re-man'd starter finally arrived, only to find they shipped me a starter for a KZ440/400.
I understand I can take the end-caps from an old KZ250 starter and switch them with the KZ440 starter as it is 12volt... 0.6KW 31 tooth CCW rotation.
If you, or anyone else has a dead KZ250 starter please contact me and I'll buy the old housing (end-caps) off you.
This is the final part I need to complete my re-build of the 1983 KZ250 LTD Belt I've been working on.

I'm thinkin' I could do a fair amount of kick or jump starting for that price. Do those 250s have a kicker?

Found an article about the lawnmower starter too.
What I ended up getting was a MITSUBA SM-8203 from the remanufacturer..... somewhere there is a KZ400/440 owner
trying to figure out why he received a starter for a KZ250 LTD......
The KZ250 can also use the starter from the 1980-83 Z250 OEM#SM-8211.... the 1982-85 KLT250.... the 1981-84 KLT200.... the1977-79 KZ200... MITSUBA SM2-23C... MITSUBA SM8-211... Kawi #21163-1036 Kawi #21163-1238.
All I need are the end-caps from a DEAD starter... any of the above... I can then switch them with the end-caps that are on the 400/440 starter I got in error.
BTW... $408 USD = $473 CDN.... $343 CDN more than I paid for the whole bike including S&H....
