Hello, I'm a new member from Pennsylvania, I recently purchased a 1980( I think ) KZ1000 Kawasaki with 7,553 original miles on it. I'm sure of the miles because it belonged to my former boss, who RARELY rode it. The problem with that is, it SMOKES!!! so I will need help to repair it . Thank You, 80kzkawi:)

I'm thinking maybe hardened valve guide seals (no biggie) or possibly frozen piston ring (bigger). Did you change the oil? How long did it sit unused before you cranked it? Others here far more capable will undoubtedly offer additional help and suggestions. If it was mine, I'd change the oil and filter and, absent any unusual motor noise, would just ride it conservatively for a while so long as exhaust smoking is the only apparent problem -- but then again I screw up sometimes, so suggest you wait for a concurring opinion or better ideas from the heavier hitting members before embarking on just my $.02.
Am unfamiliar with shaft drive, but suspect a lube might be in order.
It seems that karma has smiled on you. Congratulations on your good fortune in acquiring what sounds to be a very nice bike.
