Hello from Denver (first KZ rebuild!!)
Hello All!
40 yr. old mechanical (aerospace) engineer here residing in north Denver.
I am a long time visitor of KZRider yet for some reason procrastinated in becoming a member. This community has already helped me tremendously with my '83 KZ750 LTD H4 rebuild. So far I have completely rebuilt the forks and regeared my front and rear sprockets. I have now been working on rebuilding my carbs. .. And here's where the trouble begins!
The current state of my Keihin CV34 4-carb setup:
Complete cleans the previous very clogged carbs and passage ways (kept original jets but replaced fuel screws and float stops)
All other carb components seem to be in excellent shape! (bike has 13k miles on it)
I reinstalled the carbs and synced.
Bike starts fine but is clearly running rich based on the black/sooty plugs. However, with a throttle pull, the revs hang high for a good 5 seconds or more.
The fuel screws have almost zero effect on the idle indicating I have completely bypassed the pilot circuit. I can fully close all fuel screws and the bike idles fine.
Floats are adjusted to spec.
I'm a little at a loss at this point as I clearly have reached the limit of my carb knowledge.
The only next steps I can think of are to:
1) Resync (even though the idle is fine and when the carbs are off the bike the throttle flaps have ~ 0.5mm gap? i.e. They don't seem TOO open)
2) Buy a smoke test machine and search for vac leaks. I have not been able to see any cracks visually.
Anyhow, if you come across with introduction and care to say hi or want to leave any advice, please do! Until then, I'll continue the scour the wealth of knowledge here on KZRider!
