Hello from Chattanooga, Tennessee

Hope all are well and thank you for adding me to this forum. I have been a long time reader of this forum but have made the decision to finally join as I am recommissioning an 81 CSR after sitting in storage for 23 years.

I am currently in school for motorcycle and boat mechanics but have been turning wrenches since I was a child. I look forward to contributing as much as I can to this community.

Thanks,
Steve (Crushing)

Here is her current state as I am going through issues with a broken cam cap. Rebuilding the forks and fixing the cam issue is all that is left. I will post more as I go.

You might want to look for someone who can weld that cap (once bolted down, where it’s broken is a low stress area) the caps are matched to the head so swopping one will open a world of challenges (ask me how I know!!) if you go the welding route it needs to be torqued down with the cam and bearings in place but valves removed during welding and allowed to cool fully before unbolting

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if it could be welded. I have another head and was trying to decided to swap the cap or replace the head. I will look into it and see if I can find someone who can weld it up. I do agree that would be the best route.

You could install different caps, but you would have to restore the camshaft bore alignment. This is done using a special reamer or a line-boring bar. The cap might warp after welding—even if bolted down with the camshaft clamped in place—meaning you would end up having to take the cylinder head to a machine shop. I’ve had the camshaft bore alignment restored on two cylinder heads. First, you check the camshaft for runout using a dial indicator on V-blocks; if the shaft is straight but still doesn't rotate smoothly in the head, then it’s time to take the head to a shop. Some automotive camshafts share the same diameter as the Kawasaki camshaft. But, of course, that’s up to you.
