KZ 550 GT 87‘
18 Jul 2026 12:25
Hi everyone,My name is Dennis, and I’m new to the forum. I recently bought a 1987 Kawasaki KZ550 GT, and I’m really happy with the bike overall.Unfortunately, I discovered something I couldn’t have seen when I bought it. The fuel tank looked fine from the outside, but after about two months it started leaking. After removing it, I found that it’s badly rusted from the inside. I sent photos to two professional tank repair specialists, and both told me that the tank is unfortunately beyond repair. I’ve attached a few photos below. So I have two questions:
Dennis
- Does anyone happen to have a good fuel tank for a 1987 KZ550 GT for sale? I’m looking for one that is solid and not rusted through. If you have one, or know someone who does, I’d really appreciate it.
- I’ve been offered a KZ750 GT fuel tank. It looks almost identical in the photos. Does anyone know if the KZ550 GT and KZ750 GT tanks are interchangeable? Will it fit the mounting points and the bike without major modifications? I don’t mind if it’s slightly larger, as long as it fits properly. Has anyone here tried this before?

There is a French manufacturer that offers a kit for treating fuel tanks. The kit includes a rust remover, a degreaser, and a special resin that coats the inside of the tank, protecting it for many years. I used this product on a corroded, leaking tank, and there haven't been any leaks for nearly 15 years. I don't know if this specific product is sold in the USA, but there must be an equivalent available there.

Note: this is for filling very small holes. If the hole is too large, you need to fill it with a weld, solder, or possibly body filler before applying the resin.
