Hi from Wolverhampton UK, Z1000E1

Hi guys
Hi from Steve living in wonderful Wolverhampton in the West Midlands of the UK.
I’ve had my beloved Z1000 ST since 1984. She now has historic vehicle status - but she has a real pry which seems to baffle every mechanic I’ve taken her to.
Basically, although the airbox is standard and the pipe a Motad she runs richer than Elon’s wildest dreams and at anything other than motorway speeds she soots up and stops. I’ve tried everything - and I thought we had cracked it when I discovered that the ignition plate on its Dynatec ignition system had been factory fitted backwards so retarding the ignition timing. It shouldn’t need rejetting but I can’t see an option. I do most of my own spannering but honestly, I understood I was out of my depth a while ago.
Does anyone know a KZ guru in the West Midlands who might be able to give it a fresh eye? I’d like my bike back before I get too old to use it!
Don’t let the grass grow under your wheels
All the best,
Steve

Hi Steve, welcome from Leicestershire. Have you replaced your choke plunger seals ? If not member zed1015 does an excellent job of refurbishing your old ones (he is in the UK and turns them around quickly)

Oops! Not a good start. Sorry about that. I was just trying to share a picture of the bike. I’ll try again using another format.

Welcome from France, lived in Burntwood until 2005. Regarding the rich mixture, check the float heights with a clear tube, easy check before you start dismantling things.

Welcome Steve.

It's very very likely that the choke plunger seals are mullered which effectively means the bike is never off choke and will run excessively rich until the plugs foul.
Luckily i can repair your plungers and replace the seals with ethanol resistant Viton.
There's a very good chance your bike could be running as it should by the end of next week..

I'm in North Lincolnshire UK .
