1982 kz750H LTD stalls in 1st gear

  hello everyone i'm new here, first time rider, first time mechanic of any sort. bout this bike for $850 still starts and runs, needs some work including brake replacement and some tires. surprisingly good shape, though it also has some pinholes in the tank that need sealed. the main issue i'm having before i move on to other issues is the engine stalling out when i shift into 1st. i don't think it's the clutch itself because i can maintain whatever friction level i want pretty well. i can hear the engine losing power the more i release the clutch. the bike wants to roll but as soon as it's fully released or hit enough friction the bike lurches forward and shuts down. i tried giving it some throttle to supplement the loss in rpms but that doesn't help either. i've seen a lot of advice including in this forum saying that it could be a kickstand safety switch issue and this is where my ignorance comes in. i can't seem to find any obvious cables or devices connected to the kickstand or the frame near it and i don't yet have a copy of the fsm so i can't workout it's location exactly or where the cables would be. 

over the spam of a couple months i'll be grabbing tools and supplies needed to work on it and replace some things. my turn signals don't seem to work and i'd like to replace the bulbs in general. the suspension feels fine but it's a bit rusty and without a ride i can't tell if it's fine for now.

I think the kickstand switch would kill the engine immediately, rather than making it run poorly.

With those air filters, it does appear to be running very lean (i.e. too much air in the air-fuel mixture). The header pipes have turned blue; this often happens when they get too hot, which can be caused by running lean. Once you have the FSM, take a look at your spark plugs.
