Scared to buy this, should I be?

Clean runs good but has 42k miles on it that's what scares me....he wants 1000.00

The mileage does not concern me, but the price does.

That price seems suspiciously low for a nice looking, running motorcycle with a clear title.

Last fall I bought an equally clean 440LTD with 18K miles and a clean title - and the Mikuni VM30 kit installed - for $500. 

Prices are generally higher these days but there are still some bargains out there.

That depends on how it has been maintained, think about it's only 1000mls per year. A similar aged bike with significantly less miles has probably spent years sitting in a garage not moving which isn't good for them either. At the end of the day any 40 year old vehicle is a "roll of the dice" so the less money you have in it up front the more you have left to resolve issues

can u still get a cam chain kit for this?

you can still get pretty much everything mechanical for it

If it dosen't run or runs crappy $500. If it runs well, I'd be all in at $1,000.

Under normal conditions, the cam chain will last the life of the bike.  100k miles should be no problem.

He says the cam chain has a little noise when it starts up cold but goes away after a min warm

A lot of noises can be misdiagnosed so is he sure that its the cam chain? It could also be an exhaust leak or primary chain. A lot of the time those chain noises come from carbs that haven't been synced.
