Ok bit of an update
stripped down top end
first measured cam clearance all looks too tight
bores look perfect can still see hone marks
66mm  original bore ??
i checked gap in top ring was .022” seems to big ?
center rubber chain tunnel gasket was broken so that may explain the oil leak
 am sprocket tensioner feels ok
should I buy new rings ?
what should gap be and any comments on tight clearances causing hanging idle when warm
thanks in advance
Mike

.022 top ring gap is near the upper limit.  If you measured the gap, I'm assuming the cyliners are off and rings removed from the pistons.  Light hone on the cylinders, replace the rings, set the gap on the new rings according to the Factory service manual.  You'd be crazy to put those worn rings back in.

Now that it's all opened up, I suggest replacing sprockets, top idler, idler below tensioner,  tensioner, and front guide.  It will cost money, but in my opinion a better plan than re-using the 50 year old parts.

Do you have a Factory service manual?  FSM lists ring gap as .008 to.016 inches, service limit .028 inches.  The FSM has the procedure for reassembly, including torque values and tightening sequences.
You can find an FSM for your 73 Z1 on ebay from time to time, or you can access it here on KZR in the filebase

Looks like someone was in there at some time. What is that yellowish material around the broken tunnel o-ring. As stated above I would  replace all the cam sprockets inducing the middle one between the case and the cylinders.
