1978 KX 650 D1A

Hello all

I have my father’s 1978 KZ 650 D1A he bought the bike new when he left the navy. When he passed 4 years ago he wanted me to have it. From what I understand from my mother he would start it once a year and ride it for a day then drain the fuel and store it in their garage. So it has not ran for at least 4 years. I brought it down to Florida in a trailer this past winter and began working on it. With the help of many posts on this forum i began doing research and put a plan in place to bring the bike back to life.  I drained and replaced the oil. Removed the carbs and found that #2 carb the slide was frozen and the bowl on that same carb was gummed up. So i removed all the gaskets on all 4 carbs and removed and cleaned the jets and inspected them as well. As for the #2 slide i had to apply heat with a hand torch to free up the slide and then cleaned it with acetone and cleaner. I then reassembled the carbs. I replaced the fuel lines and vacuum line. The fuel tank had been drained by my father so i filled it and noticed that the petcock was leaking. I bought a new petcock from Dime city Cycles out of Tampa the same place i found all the gaskets for the carbs. I also replaced both coil packs and wires and plugs. The bike is 100 percent original and only has 15,515 miles on it. My mother had told me that my dad did have a rough time stating it the last couple of times and he often had to kick start it versus the key and button start.

Well yesterday day was the first day I was ready to turn it over and see what i have. I did not have to kick start it as she turned right over. Was a bit rough at first but it does run. But this is where my marine corps brain of not knowing a dang thing about bikes comes in.

The choke in the up position is on this i know when i go to disengage the choke it dies. I also notice that when getting on the throttle a bit it Boggs down. Also i have only let the bike run maybe 5 to 7 min max and through a temperature tester on the engine. Notice that cylinder 1,3,4 was around 200 while cylinder 2 was about 160.

i have a short video and am not sure if i can upload it hear for everyone to see and hear.

Any and all thoughts are much appreciated.

Welcome.

Sounds OK to me, idling a bit high after that 4K rev but I think it just needs a good run and longer than 5 minutes. I would ride it around for a bit if you can, then reassess once its good and hot.

I would shoot some spray lube (WD40) down the throttle cables from the top, crack open the switch pod to expose the cable inners. That may help it idle down a bit better. Also good to double check and make sure you have the throttle cable ends at the carbs adjusted to where you have a strong snap closed action on the slides.

A bike sitting for 4 year tends to need some TLC.

Roger that i will try the WD40 like you suggested. I was being cautious on how long to let it run at first not knowing what to expect. I do always remember my dad saying he had to let it warm up for a bit before he rode it and I know he babied this thing.

I will gladly load some more pics and a few videos if it allows on what i was dealing with on the carbs. The 55 sec video is pre dissembling and in the video i was wrong on cylinder numbers. It was actually cylinder two that had all that gummed up fuel.

thank you sir for your response
