Just wanted to say hi

What's up KZR forum?

I am Bryan, I live in Divide Colorado, at 9,500ft elevation. It's cold up here, so I like to be in my heated shop in the winter, working on stuff.

My first bike was a 1980 KZ750 LTD H1, I bought it in 1988. I rode that bike everywhere for about 4 years, it was my daily, and only mode of transportation in El Paso Texas.

Just recently picked up a 1980 KZ750 just like mine.  I'm going CAFE RACER with it though. So now I'm on KZR forums, cuz I know there is a TON of expertise and experience here, hopefully you all can help me out here and there, and become my new best friends. :)

I do almost all my own work, and rarely farm stuff out. I have replaced the entire front end with a 1996 Honda CBR600F3 front end, to include controls, used the All Balls Racing conversion kit for the bearings/stem.

I have the rear swingarm from the same Honda, already mounted, working on completion of fabbing a 17mm diameter swingarm bolt.

There are some other considerations I am already having to ponder, but not sure how to get there yet. Still brainstorming.

The following are hurdles I already foresee;
1. Rearset issue. Not using KZ pegs, looking into Universal foot peg set from Tarozzi.
2. Offset sprocket issue. Looking into various Suzuki offset sprockets for the front, which I believe have the same 13 spline pattern.
3. Wiring main harness, controls. This is mostly just figuring and planning, then executing.  Will trim out all unneeded wires from the harness.
4. Frame Issues. Once I get the rearset issue figured out, then will remove motor, and begin the work on the frame.  This will be welding anchors where needed for the rearsets, grinding off old frame mount tabs and creating new ones as needed, frame gussets to be installed to handle the Honda monoshock, and it's linkage. Will paint frame when all welding done.
5. Suspension. Probably will just need a fork rebuild, although I have no leaks now. Have the old CBR600 frame, so will study that for geometry.
6. Fuel delivery. For now have rebuilt the OEM carbs, and will run with those, but seriously considering Lectron carb upgrade, which, right now, is $1850 for all four C's! That would be the most expensive part of this build I believe.
7. Exhaust issue. The OEM 4 into 2 must go.  Looking at Delkevic thinking just the Delkevic 4 into 1 headers, then put my can on.
8. To Center Stand or NOT to Center Stand: Considering sparing the center stand, just for maintenance issues, but thinking it may have to go as that is where the linkage mount will likely go for the mono-shock.
9. Air Delivery. The KZ had it's OEM airbox installed, so not sure if this bike is gonna be finicky when changing to K&N filters on each carb. Sure that's all over the forum.
10. Seat choice. I have a really cheap "Amazon Special" seat, that just appeared in the shop one day, but that one looks better suited for a pit/mini bike.  So looking at a beefier seat, more cushion, but still has the cafe racer look.  I plan to ride the living S*!@ outta of this bike, so the seat has gotta be good.  We do a lot of twisting mountain riding up here, a lot.

So far, so smooth. We'll see how things progress.

Just got accepted into this forum today, so will be pouring through the forum over the next several days.  Any help or criticism you have is appreciated and welcomed.  Thanks ya'll!

Peace
Bryan

Welcome from the UK Bryan, love what you are doing with this one. Lot's of threads here on modified bikes that will help you avoid some of the pitfalls, I'm no expert but I believe "Lectrons" are primarily a drag part and probably not suitable for a street ride (lot of money for something that only runs right on WOT !!)

Welcome from central Massachusetts, Bryan.  This is the place where the KZ wizards can help us out with the problems we create for ourselves!  Interesting project, using front and rear components from the same donor motorcycle makes a lot of sense.

Welcome.

Like Wookie mentioned Lectrons are for dirt/drag bikes as they really don't have a proper idle circuit. If your thinking that going from a air box to pods would be a tuning challenge, then the Lectrons would be 10 times more challenging, not to mention the overkill factor on a stock bore engine and cylinder head.

If you want to upgrade the carbs look at CR29's, bolt on and tunable. The are a sensible solution and will work on a stock engine. If you look hard enough you can find used sets on Ebay etc.
