Project Newbie 1980 KZ250 LTD

Hey Group!

new to this whole thing. Picked up a “project” bike that is in pieces and trying my best to learn how to get it alive and running again. It’s a 1980 Kawasaki KZ250 LTD. Any guidance is appreciated as this bike was gained because a 12yr old wanted to learn how to ride and get to know a bike. She didn’t have much money so started off with a bike that didn’t work. I have basic mechanics but nothing into the deep with this. So everything is quite new but with proper guidance I think I can pick it up well. We have the manual for it too.

Welcome to the fun, looks like you jumped in with both feet!  There is plenty of knowledge and experience here to help you, just take one step at a time and don't get discouraged.
Look up Nessism's post "New owner things to know" for advice on getting a plan together.
You state you have a manual - any manual will help you out, a Factory service manual has the most complete information.  Copies can be found on Ebay, some for reasonable prices. Or you may be able to find it here in the KZrider archives.

Welcome... nice little project! Look forward to where the two of you go with this...

I see the plug is out, do you have compression?

Thanks Scotty. We do have a Kawasaki service manual. 2 feet with my nose sticking out of the water. It’s a bit daunting but trying to be patient. Still working on spark but found out the repair previous owner did was poorly done and shorted a few wires. Waiting for the parts to come into fix it. Gapped the contact breaker points to the manual.

Previous owner said it did have compression but I haven’t checked myself. Right now teaching the kid the wire chasing part. Once we get this repair done and hopefully spark, going to rent a compression tester so we can verify ourselves.

For wiring troubleshooting, Wookie's posts have a link to "fault diagnosis".  Works great to save the electrically challenged from ourselves!
