no spark to coil 1-4 was created by Delanermartin@yahoo.com
Hello, I have a 77 KZ 1000A and have recently installed new coils and I have power through the 2-3 coil and good spark on those plugs. If I move those secondary leads from the right coil 2-3 over to the 1-4 coil I get good spark. when I disconnect and reconnect the secondary wires back to 2-3 coil those plugs begin to fire. So if I reconnect the 1-4 secondary leads to coil on the left I get no spark. I have 11.2 volts going to the 1-4 coil. I have the specified resistance going through 1-4 coil primaries. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I believe a 77 still has "points" ignition - is this correct ?
If so connect a voltmeter across the coil terminals - when the points are closed with the ignition on this should read within 0.5v of battery voltage, rotate the engine until the points open and the voltage should drop away (coils spark when the ground is broken) if the voltage doesn't drop then the fault is either a short in the cable down to the points or the points/condenser are faulty
PS: 11.2v is very low - what is the battery voltage ? if the battery voltage is normal you might want to consider a "by-pass relay" mod

Turn off your petcock or pull the vacuum hose to the petcock
It isn't fun to have a fire
With the spark plugs out
still connected to the secondary leads
laying on the cylinder head
check for spark
swap your primary leads to your coils
check for spark
return the primary leads to their proper coil
reattach your vacuum hose to the petcock
turn off bike

Thank you for the tips. I have replaced everything except the points and condenser. I’m frustrated because it’s been one thing leading to another. Hopefully I can double check the #s you have provided and get this thing in the running column again!
thanks

Waiting for the new points and remaining parts. The voltage drop on power side is strange with new coils came new wires that plugged right in to existing double barrel power feed. The power loss is definitely down from the double plug connector which should be easy to fix. Thanks again for your insight!
