Got a 78 kz650. I've got issues with the starter clutches. But the few strokes I do get before the clutches stop grabbing I do perform a compression test to which most cylinders are around 60/70 psi. But I also know I'm not getting a full proper use of the starter. Any ideas or is this motor completely chalked?

Are you testing it with the throttle open?

Trying to do a compression test with a faulty starter clutch is “pointless”
as I understand it on the 650 you need to split the cases to fix the starter clutch (I may be wrong) manuals are accessible in the file base.
If the comp test was to check the health of the motor you could do a Leakage test which will identify significant issues (excessive wear etc)

Fortunately, the starter clutch can be serviced with the engine in place in the frame. It's not an easy job, though. There are lots of older threads describing the process, and of course, also in the service manual.

Can you kick it over to get the compression numbers?
