I'm a 63 yo retired mechanic/auto and truck technical author. I did auto and truck repair in the 80's and landed a job with the Chilton publishing company in 1992. There I helped author their repair manuals. The company shut down @1997 and from there I got a job with Bosch automotive division where I authored repair information for professionals. I retired in early 2019. I recently helped some friends with their motorcycles. The first was a Honda cb77 (1966). The other was a 1982 Honda CB900. I really enjoyed restoring and getting those bikes running so I decided to get my own project. I found a 1982 LTD KZ750 on CL with just over 11k on the clock. It is in all original condition. I will add some pics soon. I got the kz750 in September and since cleaned the carbs, replaced the carb holders and rebuilt all brake cylinders. I plan on re-chroming the header pipes. I'm not sure why they got so corroded. I see much older bikes with pipes in much better condition. Does that secondary air exhaust system contribute to early deterioration of the chrome on the pipes? Only the upper half of the pipes look bad. I have some other questions but I'll save them for later. I'm located in southwest Pennsylvania.

Wecome to KZR Len ! My idea on the header pipes is the carbs were out of adjustment and someone ran it anyway, it my have been running very lean/hot causing the chrome to deteriorate. Just my 2 cents. And Merry Christmas!

Welcome to KZR, from Toronto,Canada.
I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

It was running lean due to the leaky carb holders where they meet the head. Especially on cylinders 1 thru 3. The pipes for those cylinders are the most deteriorated. I replaced the holders  with a set from Z1. That fixed the air leaks. I didn't use sealant on the carb holders if anyone was curious. I was quoted a price of 6-8 hundred dollars to re-plate the header pipes. The bike was all original when I bought it and I planned to keep it that way. Does anyone know a good replating service in southeastern Pennsylvania?

You may want to consider Jet-Coating the pipes rather than going the more expensive re-chrome route.
