My name is Travis. I bought a 1981 KZ550 D1 last August. The bike needed a lot of work, so I spent a good part of last winter fixing it up. I apologize in advance to any purists for the pictures below , but most of the original fairings, fenders, and lights were fairly damaged, so I decided to ditch my original intention of restoring it to original. I joined the forum in hopes to get and possibly give some advice as I work to finish this project. Below are some pictures from august and some from this week. Let me know what you think!

Welcome Travis.
I've always liked the GPzs.
And their tail was a big part of that.
I see you've lost the tail, but that's okay, as it's your bike.
Not sure where your rear light and signals are, but I like to be seen, so the tail light needs to be obvious.

Me, I just ditched the rear signals on both my bikes recently, and went with the signals that are integrated into the tail light.
No more bumping into the signal stalks at the back.

Thanks for the response Nick! The taillight is just below the rear seat inside the rear frame loop. Just as with yours, my turn signals are integrated in my brake light.
