So long story but 30+ years ago I rode a Z1R and ended up getting my license revoked so I tore it down knowing I would not be able to resist riding it. It went into storage in totes and has traveled with me ever since. A few years after I tore it down I found a deal on a wrecked Z1R and bought it so I would have a model of how the other bike went back together, that bike has also traveled with me.

I recently came across a craigslist ad for someone near me seeking a 78 Z1R and I contacted him and probably should have waited as he has been very zealous to come see what I have. Given my recent retirement I am pondering putting it back together or parting or selling as a lot.

Looking at the vin on the wrecked bike it indicates KZ1000D-000470 I have to get into the safe to check the vin on the title of the other one. I have attached a pic of the bike when it was together and a couple of the wrecked one...the PDF is how my scanner saves scans...
I have a lot going on so I might not get back to any comments soon but I appreciate the wealth of knowledge found on this site. I currently ride an FJR1300...

Z1Rs have gone way up in value recently.  I've seen junk wrecks sell for $4k plus on eBay.  I suspect the guy who wants your bikes is hoping you don't know what they are worth.  I'd tell him you won't take less than $10k for both bikes.  If he's still interested, then maybe you might want to consider it.  But really there is no reason to rush.  You won't have any trouble selling if you decide to let them go.

I also have a Z1R in pieces in tubs.  I understand that it seems intimidating to put it all back together.  But there are plenty of folks here with Z1Rs who would be able to help with photos and advice.  

I think you should put it back together. 

You could part it out, but it would be sad to part a complete bike.  And you've toted it around for all this time.  You might as well put it back together now 

Don't part anything out, you'll end up with a bunch of parts that don't go, and no way to build a bike then.

A friend has a nice '78, and I believe he said he has an '80 project.

To live with a bike for 30 years and drag it around with you for that time you owe it to yourself to make her whole again, Your not the man you were when you lost you licence and im sure you wont loose it again. IM about to embark on rebuilding a Z1r and i wish i had the stable of parts that you have for my poject....

That is a beauty and surely inspiration! I think I will work on getting it back together, too many memories to part with it.

Thats the spirit! and there are enough lads on here to help you on your way trough the build, you wont be lacking kind words, helpful hints and the odd smack of reality check to keep you straight. Ill hopefully  have my frame and bodywork in the next week or 2 and ill be starting a build thread when i do so ill be watching yours if you start one.

Very nice! Not sure where you are located - I just finally finished my 1978 Z1-r (VIN 509, not far from yours!) - after toting it around the world in bins for over 10 years - you can do it! I live in Orlando and am happy to help. Like others have said, these bikes have skyrocketed, and it is worth putting it together.
