Just bought my dads 1976 KZ900 from my uncle
02 Oct 2020 11:11 - 02 Oct 2020 12:43
I need help fixing this bike and it would mean the world to me...
My dad bought this bike in 1985 with 3120 miles on it. He crashed after an s10 pulled out in front of him. He flipped over the truck and it has effected him to this day but he's alive and well. There is a lot of original parts but there has been some alterations too.
I would like to get this bike running again and working.
It will start and run while giving it some gas while partially choked both electronically and with the kick start.
I was told the motor has a 1080 kit, not sure what is in the carbs.
I need to:
Get a repair manual with specs
Rebuild the carbs
Get a Kerker exhaust (preferably chrome)
Get new 42mm air filters
get right side cover
Fix turn signals and flasher
Get new rubber mounts for side covers
Fix both speedo and tach
replace a rubber boot that goes into the trans
Get new handlebars and left side controls
Get front and rear tires
Replace front and rear brakes
Other things too I'm sure...
Will need to either replace or repair the body parts they are dented rusted or cracked
I have done a little work on my 1200 sportster and I am mechanically inclined.
I focus on quality and precision.
If you can help me find parts at a good price or recommend anything I would greatly appreciate it!

Welcome. I like the fact you want to be the custodian of a vintage machine. First thing, get the number off the steering tube and the engine, compair them to here.
zedder.com/msg1.htm
Once the bikes and engine year is confirmed then go here to look for part numbers.
www.partzilla.com/catalog/kawasaki/motorcycle
Then you have lots of options for parts.
Z1parts
Z1enterprizes
Z fever
RedLine Cycle
eBay, just be careful and vet the parts well.
Here in the wanted forum.
Just a few, lots of options, good luck and ask lots of questions and post lots of pictures.

Congrats on recovering the bike! My Z1b my father bought new in 75.
Id highly reccomend to run an airbox instead of pod filters. You can fit the aftermarket Z1 box if you dont have the original.

I also have my father's Z1b, and he also bought it in '75, but I think it was used. It's a wonderful thing to have. I still remember my first motorcycle ride on the Z1 when I was about 7.
