Hello from Wisconsin

I would like to say thanks for letting me join, I have a 1978 Kz650 SR -D1 that I was gifted by a relative fresh out of the barn, but kept in great shape. It was bought in 78 new and rode until 84 until parked in a barn under two car covers and gas drained out completely up until now. Been told there's some electrical problems. I joined hoping to gain some knowledge and skills for the bike. I work on cars and bikes in my free time and work part time at my local university and as a landscaper.

I can't help much with the bike, as I'm new to KZs too, but just wanted to say hi from another Wisconsinite. I'm on Lake Michigan about half an hour from Green Bay, just bought an 80 KZ550 LTD last night.

Welcome aboard! Man, that bike really took a beating for having less than 14,000 miles on it. One thing to keep in mind when restoring it - the screws that look like Phillips are not Phillips. They are Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screws, and using Phillips screwdrivers on them will damage them and make you VERY unhappy. If you need more info on JIS fasteners just ask and we can provide detail info on how to modify Phillips screwdrivers to JIS and/or where to buy JIS drivers. Ed

Welcome. From SE Michigan. Take your time on getting that thing running. Get a manual. Kawasaki factory is the best, then I’d suggest a good bath. Make sure there is no debris around the spark plugs. Pull them and put some oil in the cylinders and let that soak while your reading a manual so you can start going through the bike to get it roadworthy. Remember one important thing. If you get it running make sure it will stop. Check the brake system before any ride outside of your back yard.
