after a 30 year kawi hiatus, a bunch of bmw k bikes, a few suzukis and triumph tigers and one honda nighthawk, i bought a basket case '83 gpz1100 (zx1100a) about a month ago that was "rid hard 'n put away wet". . 55k miles and few of them were easy. best guess is that it was sitting about 4 years. paint is newish, fresh bore to 75mm with domed wiseco pistons, half the cam retaining bolts were iffy threads, other half sloppy 8mm. an intake and an exhaust vale were bent.
po must have had stock in a baling wire company. there's pieces holding most of the floppy parts together, and black electrical tape and hose clamps abound. the top end was off and the cams slightly rusty as well as some lifter buckets. the buckets and shims were scattered and the bolt bucket had been half filled with water.
i might have the engine running in a few weeks if the fuel injection works and the rusty tank cleaning holds up (it's currently sitting full of diesel fuel after a phosphoric acid bath).
tidying up the rest of it will be next. it won't be a show bike, but i'd like it to be a decent looking 25 footer.
i may be picking some experts' brains here before too long.
