I am new to this forum!!! 77 KZ1000 was created by menace
I am new to this forum I have a ZRX and I am a member at ZRXOA.org one of the members there said that this forum is great and that I should join so here I am. I will be picking up a 1977 KZ1000 this Sunday I do not know much about the bike. He said that it is 77 and its a 1000 and that when they put an after market exhaust on it they had to remove the center stand. He said that he has the stock exhaust and many other stock parts. It has been sitting for about 10 to 15 years. My plan is to go through the carbs, fuel tank, fuel lines, check or replace the points, change the oil. Does anyone have any tips of things I should do to the top end or engine before I start it? I had a 78 KZ1000 and 79 KZ650 I have also had 4 of the old kawi triples. I am not new to this but I am trying to take all the steps i can to keep the cylinders in good shape I am trying to avoid removing the cams, head and cylinders. Thanks guys

Welcome to KZR menace!

I'm sure that there'll be plenty of folks with suggestions bout how to bring an old KAW back to life. Reading your post I'm pretty sure you already know most of 'em. At the risk of stating the obvious, I'd pull the plugs and squirt a little Marvel Mystery Oil into each cylinder then crank it, with the plugs still out.

Welcome aboard. There are quite a few KZ/ZRX folks around.

I would add checking the valve lash to your pre-start list. It is a very important and often neglected maintenance item. Checking it on the KZ is in no significant way different from checking on your ZRX. The adjustment is a little more involved since there are no rockers, but it is not really difficult. If you don't have a factory service manual, get one. There might be one you can download from this site.

Oh yes, please post pictures. Most folks here are picaholics. Maybe because we can't read.

Welcome menace.
I would put a shot of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crank case too.

Welcome.
+1 everything above.

But,

Brakes first.

Before you make it go, make sure it'll stop. After sitting for a decade +, brakes will need much TLC.

Give it a proper service , change oil and filter, check and adjust valve lash, adjust cam chain tensioner , check and adjust points, clean and service carbs, renew air filter, renew spark plugs, put a bit of oil in the bores, and some on the cams, and turn the engine over on the battery with the spark plugs out before you start it, this will get the oil to all the right places before you actually start it up, and most important check drive chain and service the brakes before riding it anywhere. good luck.

thank you for the warm welcome guys. sounds like good advice for sure. i will be taking a rubber mallet with me to free up the calipers and also an air bubble. i dont know if i will be able to load this thing up by myself. what really sucks is i have no idea if it has stock paint or if it has stock air box or any of that. i just know he said he had to take off the center stand to get the after market exhaust on it, and that he kept all the factory parts.
